Understanding of a new mother’s vulnerability is an essential part of her transformation from maiden to mother, this can help tremendously in her recovery from pregnancy and birth and the transition of becoming a Newborn mother.
A sacred healing space is created for this ceremony. Lights are dimmed, a mat and some blankets are placed on the floor, there is healing music playing. When the woman to be blessed is ready, we start with some energy cleansing with traditional methods such as the Indian technique of ringing a bell to cleanse the field of the woman and using sage and Palo Santo to clear any lower vibrational energy fields around them. The practice of burning herbs for purification and cleansing dates back to the beginning of mankind. This is a ritual that has been documented and practiced by many indigenous tribes around the world. It is a ceremonial way to cleanse a person, place or an object of negative energies. The woman then lies on a mat on the floor or on the bed depending on the individual.
With the help of a rebozo, the hips of the woman that have widened and open to accommodate the growing baby and to give birth are gently rocked and pulled back into place. The gentle rocking movement has a calming and nurturing effect. We are also honouring the work these hips had to go through to bring a new life into the world.
Warm medicated Ayurvedic oil is applied all over the body including the belly and a gentle massage begins. The movements are rhythmic and relaxing, bringing the energy of the woman back to her womb space. We are lovingly taking care of this area.
For the last part of the ceremony, a woman’s body is tightly wrapped using rebozos. We wrap different parts of her body—feet, knees, hips, shoulders, head. The woman is then left to rest as we hold this sacred space for her. Some energy work and drumming are done to bring her back to herself , balance her energy and relax her deeply. This treatment helps to stimulate blood flow, cleans, renews, moves fluids, balances hormones, stimulates the immune system, and helps tone muscles and tissues. This powerful and ancient ritual can be a transformational practice for mama's who are looking to find more peace and balance within.
We truly hope more women participate in this beautiful ritual after giving birth and we look forward to holding space for you. This can be performed days or years after birth. Rest, warmth and bodywork is essential for a Newborn mother
